Chief Duraiappah’s Statement Regarding Incident at Local Gym - Officer Suspended Pending Investigation

Region of Peel – This afternoon, Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah became aware of an incident outside a local Gym in Mississauga involving a 12 Division uniform patrol Sergeant. The officer was seen on various social media posts interacting with members of the public and not wearing issued protective equipment. 

Chief Duraiappah states, “Upon learning of the incident, I immediately directed that the Sergeant be suspended and commenced an Internal Affairs investigation. Peel Regional Police are committed to ensuring the safety of our members and the public. Our officers will enforce municipal and provincial regulations as required.”

As an organization, we continue to follow the advice issued from the federal, provincial, and local public health officials while using the appropriate safety precautions, including all available Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

We support all measures necessary to limit the spread of COVID-19 both in our workplace and our community. 

Under current COVID-19 restrictions issued from the Province of Ontario, Peel Region remains under a stay-at-home order. All gatherings, rallies, protests, and peaceful assemblies must follow existing Provincial Regulations and City By-Laws. Tickets may be issued to individuals or organizers who do not comply with this order.
