Achievements and Awards

Peel Regional Police has a long-standing commitment to fostering a healthy workplace culture and environment. In October 2023, PRP was awarded Silver Level Certification in the category of Healthy Workplace Standard by Excellence Canada.

The following programs and initiatives implemented across the service received recognition:

On November 4, 2022, The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Chancellor of the Order of Ontario, appointed Chief Nishan Duraiappah to the Order of Ontario.

The Order of Ontario is the province's highest civilian honour for individuals. Lieutenant Governor Dowdeswell recognized Chief Duraiappah for dedicating his life to strengthening relations between the police and Ontario’s diverse communities through volunteer work, diversity initiatives, policing innovations, and outreach programs.

The Member of the Order of Merit recognizes exceptional service or performance of duty over an extended period, usually at the local or regional/provincial level.

On January 30, 2019, Civilian Ann King and recently-retired Supt. Manuel Rodrigues were both honoured as Members of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces by Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada. We congratulate Ms. King and Supt. Rodrigues for being recognized for their long-term and significant contributions to policing in Canada, extending beyond protection of the community.

Chief Jennifer Evans was presented with the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) President's Award of Merit. It is the association's highest award, and Chief Evans was acknowledged by police leaders for demonstrating outstanding dedication and support to the association. Achievement

Opening of PRP Headquarters, located at 7150 Mississauga Road, Mississauga. A number of corporate bureaus including Chief's Management Group, Professional Standards, Human Resources, Business Services and Corporate Communications moved in. The location at 7750 Hurontario Street, Brampton which was once the official headquarters has been renamed the Sir Robert Peel Centre. It remains home to 22 Division, Records Services, Forensic Identification Services, Radio Communications, and Information Technology Services.

Excellence Canada Platinum Level Certification

In December 2017, Excellence Canada staff applauded the PRP for its excellent profile throughout Canada. For instance, many other Police Services look to PRP as a role model for its unique processes/practices and innovative software developments (MAP, Prisoner Tracking, E-Time), etc. Long-term group training by cohort and the use of Naloxone are other examples of leading practice. PRP has been recognized externally, e.g., first police services to receive the Employee Assistance Society of North America's (EASNA) Corporate Award of Excellence, named by Mediacorp as one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers, named as one of Canada's Top Employers for Young People, and awarded the Ontario Employer Designation from the Provincial Partnership Council, to name a few!

Additionally, Excellence Canada staff noted the following practices stood out as best practices compared to other organizations in Canada:

• Psychological Safeguarding Program.
• Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO).
• Road to Mental Readiness.
• Focus on people and community.
• eDisclosure.
• Prisoner Management Application/System.

Quality Assurance began implementing Excellence Canada's Mental Health at Work Standard.

IALEIA Award

We received an International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts (IALEIA) Award and the 2010 Professional Service Award in Category 1A. This award recognizes organizations making the most significant progress utilizing intelligence analytical techniques to support law enforcement objectives.

Excellence Canada Level 2 Integrated Quality and Healthy Workplace Certification

The Excellence Canada staff identified a number of our best practices, including the Management Action Plan System, the Peer Support Program and the Early Intervention Program (PEP). We were recognized as a role-model for Police Services organizations. We are the only police service with certification in this PEP program.

Launching Online Public Reporting

We launched an online reporting system for the public to report minor occurrences such as thefts, mischief and lost property.

Youth In Policing Initiative (YIPI)

We welcomed 10 summer students under YIPI. YIPI is designed to strengthen relationships with youth by providing a positive learning and mentoring environment, and to promote policing as a career. YIPI is funded by the Provincial Ministry of Children and Youth Services.

New Joint Use Facility (21 Division)

A newly facility opened, housing 21 Division and other Region of Peel programs and services. The facility obtained a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) basic designation for environmental efficiency.

Safer Police Vehicles

We unveiled Ontario's first police cruiser equipped with intermittent blue lights in its emergency lighting packaging. The blue light was added to the existing red and white lights on the roof, grill and dash light systems to enhance cruiser visibility.

New Look Initiative

The light blue shirt worn by uniform officers was replaced with a dark coloured shirt. Traffic vests and raincoats were also changed to a lime green color.

Vehicle Decal Redesign

The redesign of marked police cruisers was revealed to the public on July 14. The new decals were created by using input from PRP members. Designs were put up to a vote.

Changes To The Organizational Chart

Two new Deputy Chiefs were added to the organization.

Addressing Gangs

Strategic Tactical Enforcement Policing (STEP) was implemented to proactively reduce incidents of gang violence and enhance public safety. The program is designed to develop community-based projects to conduct street level enforcement in identified problem areas.

New Mission & Values Statement

Our updated Mission Statement reflects the leadership role that we will undertake when working with our community to achieve our goals. Our Values Statement T.R.U.S.T. reflects our core values and provides our members with guidance and good judgment in solving ethical problems.

Mobile Data Unit (MDU)

The Mobile Data Unit system was implemented in all patrol police vehicles. The MDU provides improved dispatch capabilities and increases officer effectiveness, efficiency and safety by providing officers with enhanced access to numerous police databases, mug shots and in-car mapping systems.

CALEA Flagship Status

We received re-Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

CALEA acknowledges the most successful accredited public safety agencies for their expertise and achievements through Flagship Status. We were awarded Flagship Status, becoming the first police agency in Canada to receive this distinction.

School Police Emergency Action Response (SPEAR)

This is a joint initiative with the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, designed to provide police personnel with immediate and critical information to help respond to violent and/or large scale school incidents. SPEAR was released in November 2004 and received its first annual update in 2005.

Youth Intervention Program

The Youth Intervention Program operates within high schools. The program is designed to identify high-risk young people. Youth Intervention monitors these individuals and provides them references for community resources.

Achievement

The Emil V. Kolb Centre for Police Excellence, located at 180 Derry Road East, was completed on time and under budget. Official ground opening ceremony and dedication of the new police facility took place on May 5. A number of specialized units work out of this facility including Victim Services of Peel, the Homicide and Missing Persons, Fraud and Commercial Auto Crime bureaus.

Achievement

The Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and the Divisional Traffic Unit (DTU) were formed and placed at each division. ERU officers responded to emergency calls and engaged in proactive community policing. DTU officers focused on divisional traffic concerns.

Vision Statement

On May 11, we introduced our corporate vision statement of 'A Safer Community.'

Achievements

We hosted 50th Anniversary Ontario Chiefs of Police Association Conference. We started Internet safety "cyberproof" program with Peel District and Dufferin Peel Catholic School Boards. We implemented a crime prevention strategy to promote Internet safety and address new trends in technological crimes. As a result, we developed 17 relationships with internet service providers and public network administrators.

Achievement 

We focused on youth issues, and launched Youth Education Unit.

Silver Anniversary 

We celebrated 25 years as a Regional Police Service.

American Society of Industrial Security Award

American Society of Industrial Security recognized us for our role in developing Chantel's Place. Chantel's Place is a sexual assault and domestic violence suite at Mississauga Trillium Health Centre.

Unit of the Year Award 

Crime Prevention Services received Unit of the Year Award from International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners.

Ontario Crime Commission Award 

Ontario Crime Commission recognized the success of the High Enforcement Action Team. The special unit was set up to reduce the numbers of car thefts.

Webber Seavey Award 

We won the Webber Seavey Award for quality in law enforcement.

Canada Awards of Excellence 

We received a Certificate of Merit in "Canada Awards of Excellence" program from the National Quality Institute. We were the first government service to receive the certificate.

Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) 

We received accreditation from CALEA. We were the first police service in Ontario, and the fifth in Canada, to meet standards.

CALEA acknowledges the most successful accredited public safety agencies for their expertise and achievements through Flagship Status. We were awarded Flagship Status, becoming the first police agency in Canada to receive this distinction.
