Transitioning Youth into Independence - Helpful Resources for Families

As children grow there inevitably comes a time when they acquire more independence. This may mean traveling about on their own or staying home alone for extended periods of time. For each family and each child, this time of independence differs. The differing factors are often based on the youth’s level of maturity and responsibility as well as the comfort level of the parents. Peel Regional Police would like to offer families some resources that will support a safer transition into youth independency.
For families with youth beginning to travel about on their own, you will find safety tips and information regarding many relevant topics such as walking home alone, bicycle safetyandstreet proofing on the Peel Regional Police Child and Teen Safety web page.
For families with youth that are getting ready to spend time alone in the home, Peel Regional Police recommend that parents review the helpful document provided by Peel Children’s Aid Home Alone - When Can Children Stay on Their Own? We also recommend that each child participate in a home alone safety course. There is one provided online by SOS 4 Kids as well as St. John Ambulance.
For youth that have the additional responsibility of caring for younger siblings while home alone, Peel Regional Police recommend they take a babysitting course. St. John Ambulance and SOS 4 Kids offer these programs in Peel Region as well.
Promoting a safer transition for the future leaders of this Region and a Safer Community Together.
