Educating and Protecting our Senior Citizens
The Peel Regional Police Annual report states that officers attended over 300 elder abuse calls in 2017.
Getting older is a difficult time for many people. Senior citizens are a vulnerable community that can become the target of physical, financial and psychological abuse. This abuse can come from family members, friends or even people they have just met. Knowing the signs and symptoms of someone being abused is important.
Victims of elder abuse may show signs of any of the following symptoms:
- Depression
- Fear
- Physical Injuries
- Dehydration or malnourishment
- Poor hygiene
If you suspect that someone is a victim of elder abuse please contact police. Even if the situation appears minor police can still recommend many different resources like home support services, income assistance programs and counselling services available within the community.
The Peel Regional Police Elder Abuse Co-ordinator can also provide information, assistance and guidance to victims and their families. They can also coordinate training programs and conduct presentations to educate our community on elder abuse.
Safety Seniors is a half day seminar that focuses on the needs and vulnerabilities of seniors including personal and property protection, fraud and more.
If you would like Peel Police to hold a Seniors Safety seminar please contact Crime Prevention.
