Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP)

Since 2020, the Government of Canada has prohibited over 2,500 assault-style firearms. In light of this, on January 17, 2026, the Government of Canada announced the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP). This program allows eligible individuals and businesses who own newly classified prohibited firearms to declare ownership and receive money in exchange for their surrendered weapon(s). Compensation is dependent on the availability of the program funds. To be eligible for the program, an application must be submitted through the federal portal. The deadline to submit an application is March 31, 2026.

While Peel Regional Police will not be participating in the federal initiative, Peel Regional Police will continue to collect and process firearms that are voluntarily brought to our divisions by residents of Peel Region beginning April 1. There is no compensation provided for firearms surrendered at a local Peel division.
