VIDEO: Stomping Out The Stigma

WATCH

Strong. Tough. Brave.

Those are some the words that come to mind when you think of a first responder. And if you ask a person who is first responder be they a police officer, fireman, paramedic, they would probably use the same words. While those words are certainly true there are some other words that come to mind also.

Pain. Trauma. Anguish.

The reality is that first responders are like everyone else, we also hurt sometimes. Not just physically but from mental trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The culture of being strong and tough is sometimes the barrier that prevents first responders from seeking help.

That is where Boots on the Ground can help.

Recognizing that first responders in need of help maybe reluctant to contact their own organization for help, retired Peel Regional Police officer, Dave McLennan, started Boots on the Ground. Boots on the ground provides 24/7, confidential peer support to first responders across Ontario.

“We formed the program over two years and we developed a program we felt would be useful to first responders either suffering from PTSD or other stress related issues,” says Dave McLennan.

The group is comprised of current and former first responders who volunteer their services. Each member has received peer support training, and suicide prevention training.

If you know of a first responder that may need assistance please visit Boots on the Ground for more information.
