VIDEO: Operation Heat
Operation Heat is a way for officers to break the ice and break down barriers with youth, to let them realize the important role they play in community safety.
This youth initiative was developed by Circle K (formerly known as Mac’s Convenience Store) in 2007 as part of their “crime prevention through community engagement” strategy. Positive Ticketing offers police officers an opportunity to engage young people who are observed doing random acts of kindness or exhibiting positive behaviour in the community. This interaction affords a moment for officers to build rapport and create positive relationships with youth.
Since 2013 Peel Regional Police have issued over 67,000 positive tickets in Peel Region.
Peel Regional Police officers from the Community Mobilization Unit, Youth Education and School Resource Officers all take part in this initiative. This year the program has been expanded to include Brampton Libraries (7 locations), Safe City Mississauga Aspiring Tutoring Program (10 locations), and both Brampton and Mississauga Transit.
A positive ticket gives youth a free hot chocolate from any Circle K when caught in the act of:
Practicing Personal Safety
Participating in Community Activities
Demonstrating Community Pride
Demonstrating a Positive Attitude
