VIDEO: Listen To The Boss Before You Cross

The new school year is about to commence and parents are preparing their kids to go back to school. Peel Regional Police want to remind parents that along with new clothes, backpacks and binders, make sure your kids understand how important it is to stay safe while walking to school.
The Region of Peel has over 390 school crossing guards for kindergarten to grade five children in the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board and Peel District School Board.
Officer Michelle asked Crossing Guard Barb Barrett to help remind everyone the importance of properly using crossing guards when walking to school. Barb has been a Crossing Guard for the City of Brampton for over 12 years and takes the safety of everyone’s children very seriously.
Before your little ones head off to school, it is important to remind them of these important rules:
- Stop when the crossing guard has the stop sign in an upright position.
- Stop when the guard is entering the roadway.
- Remain stopped until the children and the crossing guard have safely cleared the roadway.
- Under the Highway Traffic Act, a crossing guard’s stop sign has the same legal authority as a stop sign at an intersection. You could face a minimum $150 fine and three demerit points for not stopping.
Remember crossing guards have a job to do so please follow their direction and keep yourself safe.
