VIDEO: K9-5 PSD Otto Gets a Tune Up: A Police Dog Visits the Vet
Dogs, everyone’s best friend, they give you unconditional love and are always happy to see you. From the day we get them as puppies to the day they pass, they become a part of the family, and just like any family member they need to go to the vet once in a while. Our canine unit has 13 Police Service Dogs (PSD) Otto who goes by the call sign K9-5 is one of those dogs!
Constable John Nowak is Otto’s handler, this means he has been with Otto since he began with the unit. They train, work and live together. Otto’s primary function is being a patrol dog, he is able to track, perform area, building and article searches and apprehensions. These skills are very useful for locating evidence whether it has fallen to the ground or has been hidden away. Otto also has a secondary specialty as he is cross trained in human remains detection. His ability to identify areas where there are human remains is invaluable.
On this day, Otto went to the vet for his yearly checkup and vaccinations. The veterinarian at Oak Park Pet Hospital closely examined the function of Otto’s ears, nose and eyes versus general condition for a traditional family dog. For example, because Otto does area searches and human remain detection the veterinarian wants to make sure that Otto’s nose and smelling sensors are working at peak levels.
The canine unit is a vital part of Peel Regional Police as they provide support service for all officers and the community. Watch PSD Otto’s visit to the veterinarian NOW.
