Traffic Safety Initiative in School Communities
Region of Peelβ As students, families, school staff and faculty continue to settle into their school-year routines, Peel Regional Police continue to remain focused on the safety of pedestrians and motorists within our school communities.
In partnership with both the Peel District and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Boards and Brampton and Mississauga By-law Enforcement Units, Peel Regional Police will be conducting traffic safety initiatives in school communities throughout the Region.
Commencing Monday November 18, 2019, officers from regional and divisional traffic units and School Resource Officers will be proactively patrolling school communities throughout Brampton and Mississauga enforcing all applicable Provincial Highway Traffic Act offences. Officers will be educating both motorists and pedestrians through enforcement and through the use of our various Peel Regional Police social media platforms. The areas of focus for this campaign will be school bus safety, speeding, and distracted driving.
This campaign will be in effective for two weeks and results will be made available at the conclusion of the campaign.
Drivers are reminded that when a school bus has stopped and activated itβs flashing red lights, all vehicles travelling behind or approaching the bus must come to a complete stop, 20 metres before reaching the bus. The crossing arm and stop sign on the school bus do not have to be activated. If drivers are travelling in the opposite direction of the bus and there is a solid median dividing the roadway, vehicles are not required to stop.
An essential part of road safety is education. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the laws in school zones and when approaching or meeting a stopped school bus. Road safety is a shared responsibility.
