This is About Keeping Criminals Off the Street
Chief Jennifer Evans wants everyone to know that she is concerned about the safety of her community.
On June 28, 2018, Peel Regional Police Chief Jennifer Evans appeared before Peel Regional Council to announce the release of the 2017 Annual Report.
After she provided an overview of numerous issues she was asked questions about increasing crime in Peel Region and if statistics were available to indicate if crime was increasing or decreasing since the new street check legislation was introduced.
Chief Evans responded that there was an indication that crime has gone up.
“Since the new street check legislation was introduced, it restricted how officers are able to interact with members of the public. This has empowered criminals, who think officers won’t stop them, they now are more confident that they will get away with carrying guns and knives. We have seen an increase in violent crime over the past year.” said Chief Evans.
We have also seen a dramatic spike in shots being fired. Chief Evans is reminded of this daily by the number of firearm casings she keeps on her desk, which represent shots fired from 2014 to today.
This is about keeping criminals off the street. We are working extremely hard to ensure everyone’s safety. We have a solvency rate for crime that is above the Provincial and National average, but we want to do better.
We need the community to support us in our work and help us prevent and solve crime. Trust and confidence in our police service is critical.
