The Truth of the Statement “It Takes a Village” - a 911 Response to CSWB through Clothing and Footwear - DMU Spring Clothing Drive

Many of our essential community partners in Brampton such as Regeneration, S.H.I.P. (Services and Housing in the Province), Wilkinson Shelter as well as the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse have been providing the necessities of life to our most vulnerable community members for many years.

Necessities provided most often, along with food and shelter, are emergency clothing and footwear when community members arrive not dressed for the weather.

The available stores of these necessities deplete quickly however and our partner organizations are very dependent on community donations to supply these emergency provisions to clients.

Members of Peel Regional Police Divisional Mobilization Unit (D.M.U.) have therefore identified an opportunity for employees of this organization to contribute to the safety and well-being of our most vulnerable community members in a simple yet critical and tangible way.  They are collecting used clothing and footwear throughout the spring and selecting a different organization every month to be the recipient of the goods.

The first recipient of this initiative was Regeneration on April 6, 2021. Peel Regional Police delivered two industrial sized bins full to the brim with bags and backpacks of clothing.

“We are so grateful for donations like this. In times like these, a gentleman will walk in and say “I have no shoes” or “I have no backpack” and with this we can put shoes on someone’s feet and give someone a backpack who needs it.” Said Daniel Gibson, Director of Community Engagement at Regeneration Outreach Community. “If you have been camping or been outside for any period of time you realise how important something like a backpack can be. It can really change someone’s life in a meaningful way. So every donation like this just goes to help us to help people who have immediate needs.”

Peel Regional Police are motivated to move forward with this campaign and encourage any partner organizations interested in pursuing causes such as this to do the same.

“The phrase “It takes a Village” is so true” according to Gibson. “Our partnerships with PRP and other community organizations that are so interested in ensuring our community is safe and that the people are provided for and taken care of is so vital.

The safety and well-being of the community is a collective responsibility and Peel Regional Police will continue to collaborate with Community Safety and Well Being partners to improve outcomes for priority populations.
