Special Olympics Torch Run, In Her Memory
Chief Chris McCord laced up his running shoes and participated in the 11km run from 21 Division, 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton to 180 Derry Road, Mississauga, in memory of one of our own.
Peel Regional Police’s annual torch run for Special Olympics was renamed after Detective Catherine Heaney passed away in 2008, after a long battle with cancer. Prior to her policing career Catherine was an advocate for Special Olympics, dedicating countless of hours to a cause that was dear to her heart. Her unwavering pledge to Special Olympics continued during her 20 year career. She volunteered, organized events, engaged community partners and was honoured in 2006 with the prestigious Torch Run Award of Honour by the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run Executive Committee.
“I worked with Catherine and knew personally of her passion for Special Olympics. It gives me great joy to be participating today, honouring her memory and I am so proud of our organization for the continued support and commitment to the Catherine Heaney Memorial Run for Special Olympics” said Chief McCord.
