Public Advisory: Protect Yourself from Phone Scams

Region of Peel – Peel Regional Police is warning the public to remain vigilant, following reports of fraudulent phone calls, largely targeting members of the Asian community.
Members of the public are reportedly receiving phone calls that appear to come from the Peel Police non-emergency line (905-453-3311).
- The caller claims to be a police officer or member of the Peel Regional Police.
- The caller references personal information about the victim to establish trust and extract further sensitive information, including banking details.
- The caller claims you are a suspect, threatens arrest and makes demands for payment.
Members of public are advised to stay alert and be cautious when sharing personal information.
- If you receive a suspicious call, hang up right away.
- Never share your personal information or send any money.
- If you have provided information on banking details, contact your credit agency, Transunion Canada/ or Equifax, and have your accounts monitored.
- If you believe you have given money to a fraudster, call your local police.
Please be advised that if Peel Regional Police officers contact you, it will be for legitimate reasons concerning an ongoing compliant or investigation. If you are uncertain whether the person you are speaking with is a police officer, you may ask for their name, badge number, and/or relevant occurrence/report number they are investigating.
