Police Warn Public of Distraction Thefts Targeting Elderly Victims

MediaRelease8

Region of Peel – Investigators from the 21 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau are warning the public about a series of ongoing distraction thefts targeting elderly members of the community in Brampton.

Police have received multiple reports of incidents in which suspects approach elderly victims walking alone. The suspects engage the victims in conversation, often asking them to come closer to a vehicle. In many cases, language barriers make it difficult for victims to fully understand the suspects. Once the victim approaches, the suspects either snatch or secretly swap the victim’s jewellery before fleeing the scene.

In some incidents, a female suspect has approached victims under the guise of conversation or assistance before a male suspect exits a vehicle to forcibly remove their jewellery.

Police are urging community members to remain alert and vigilant, particularly when approached by unknown individuals in vehicles. Residents are asked to report any suspicious activity, vehicles, or individuals attempting to engage with elderly pedestrians.

Anyone with information, surveillance, or dashcam footage related to these incidents is asked to contact investigators from the 21 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at 905-453-2121, ext. 2133. Information may also be provided anonymously by contacting Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca. In case of an emergency, call 9-1-1.
