Peel Region remains one of the safest communities in Canada

Region of Peel – On July 27, 2023, Statistic Canada published its 2022 Crime Severity Index. The Crime Severity Index (CSI) increased from 2021 across Canada and Ontario; and Peel Region was no exception to the trend in 2022.
Overall, Peel Region continues to be the safest community in Canada for a jurisdiction with a population of a million or more according to the 2022 CSI. The CSI is a metrics that takes into account the number of crimes as well as the relative seriousness of crimes. It puts more weight on the serious crimes such as homicides and reduces the impact of high-volume, less serious offences such as minor theft.
In 2022, police-reported crime in Canada increased for the second consecutive year by 4%.

“The rising crime trends is concerning, however, Peel Regional Police is committed to investing in the appropriate strategies to ensure our operations are reflective of our community’s needs and public safety priorities,” said Chief Nishan Duraiappah. “I want to thank our officers, civilian professional and community partners for their continued work to ensure Peel remains a safe place to live and work” he added.
Peel Regional Police is committed to consistently improving safety in Peel through continued investments into our community and our membership. This includes being agile in our operations, adopting a human-rights centric approach across our service and further advancing Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) priorities.
PRP is investing in better data collection to support evidence-based decision making. As a result, the 2022 Statistics Canada data will further assist in determining the priorities of the 2024-2027 Strategic Plan.
