Peel Region remains one of the safest communities in Canada

Three Flags _

Region of Peel – On July 27, 2023, Statistic Canada published its 2022 Crime Severity Index. The Crime Severity Index (CSI) increased from 2021 across Canada and Ontario; and Peel Region was no exception to the trend in 2022.

Overall, Peel Region continues to be the safest community in Canada for a jurisdiction with a population of a million or more according to the 2022 CSI. The CSI is a metrics that takes into account the number of crimes as well as the relative seriousness of crimes. It puts more weight on the serious crimes such as homicides and reduces the impact of high-volume, less serious offences such as minor theft.

In 2022, police-reported crime in Canada increased for the second consecutive year by 4%.

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Peel’s overall CSI (45.0) is below Canada (78.1) and Ontario (58.5). Peel’s CSI increased 24.8% from 2021.
  • Peel’s violent CSI (65.9) is below Canada (97.7) and Ontario (77.7). Peel’s Violent CSI increased 33.5% from 2021 due to more homicides and robberies.
  • Peel’s non-violent CSI (37.0), is well below Canada (70.9) and Ontario (51.3). Peel’s non-violent CSI increased by 19.2%, the largest increase of all comparison agencies driven by increases to property crime such as auto theft.

Weighted clearance rate: portion of criminal incidents solved by police.

  • Peel’s weighted clearance rate (38.7) is higher than Canada (35.8) and below Ontario (39.9), and is the best among municipalities with population over one million.
  • Peel’s violent weighted clearance rate (58.7) is higher than Canada (55.6) and Ontario (60.3), and is the best among municipalities with population over one million.
  • Peel’s non-violent weighted clearance rate (24.5) is lower than Canada (24.9) and Ontario (27.5). It ranks behind Edmonton (28.8), York (26.2) and Ottawa (25.3).

Crime rates per capita (per 100,000):

  • Peel’s total crime rate per capita is 2,630, below the rate for Canada at 5,668 and Ontario at 4,151, and the lowest compared to other jurisdictions.
  • Peel’s Violent Crime rate per capita is 677, below the rate for Canada at 1,365 and Ontario at 994, and the lowest compared to other similar jurisdictions.

“The rising crime trends is concerning, however, Peel Regional Police is committed to investing in the appropriate strategies to ensure our operations are reflective of our community’s needs and public safety priorities,” said Chief Nishan Duraiappah. “I want to thank our officers, civilian professional and community partners for their continued work to ensure Peel remains a safe place to live and work” he added.

Peel Regional Police is committed to consistently improving safety in Peel through continued investments into our community and our membership. This includes being agile in our operations, adopting a human-rights centric approach across our service and further advancing Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) priorities.

PRP is investing in better data collection to support evidence-based decision making. As a result, the 2022 Statistics Canada data will further assist in determining the priorities of the 2024-2027 Strategic Plan.
