Peel Police-Peel Police Set to Participate in Provincial Gun Amnesty Program
Peel Region â During the month of April, Peel Regional Police will be participating in a provincial gun amnesty program with the Ontario Provincial Police and other police services across Ontario.
The Gun Amnesty is for any Ontario resident who wishes to voluntarily surrender unwanted or illegally-owned firearms, weapons, accessories or ammunition.
The Amnesty is a way to provide members of the community with a safe way to surrender weapons and enhance public safety. During the Amnesty, Police will not recommend weapons-related Criminal Code charges that might otherwise apply to people who are turning in these items.
It is important to understand that there is no amnesty offered for people who turn in weapons that have been used in the commission of a crime. No anonymous submissions will be accepted.
In the spring of 2017, Peel Regional Police conducted a Gun Amnesty Program to provide members of the community a controlled and safe opportunity to surrender unwanted firearms and ammunition for destruction. During the gun amnesty program, 52 homes were visited and a total 69 firearms, 6 edged weapons, and 75 pounds of ammunition were turned over by residents of the Region of Peel.
Members of the public residing in the Region of Peel who wish to participate in this program are to be directed to contact the Peel Regional Police Amnesty Hotline, starting Sunday, April 1, 2018 at 905-460-4122. For firearms outside of the Region of Peel, members of the public are to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 to make arrangements for a safe pick up of their firearms and/or ammunition.
Please do not bring these items to a police facility.
Anyone with information related to illegal firearms can contact the Street Crime Gang Unit at (905) 453-2121, ext. 7704. Information may also be left anonymously by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or by visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.
