Our Crest Is More Than A Patch
Have you ever looked at the uniform of a Peel Regional Police officer, and wondered about the meaning of our patch? More than 2,000 officers proudly wear the patch and while it’s a simple design it is full of symbolic meaning. Each element of the patch highlights features of our diverse region. Let’s take a walk through history to learn more about the meaning behind the patch.
This design was brought to life by Herb Quentien, a graphic designer for the Region of Peel, in the late 1970s, a time when designs were drawn and coloured by hand until the final version was selected. At a glance, you see our name, and leaves surrounding a shield decorated with an image of a tree, wheat, a building and a train.
One of the most prominent images of the crest is the 24 leaves that surround the shield. These symbolize the members of Regional Council, the Chief Administrative Officer, the Regional Chairman and the Regional Clerk. Next is the shield that is divided into four quadrants. The tree symbolizes the variety of recreational opportunities available within the region. The image of wheat refers to the region’s rich agricultural heritage. The bottom portion of the shield contains images of a train, a symbolic representation of various forms of transportation, and a building, that represents the growing industry of our prospering region.
Next time you look at the region’s crest, see it for everything it stands for, the strength and growth of our community, that keeps us proud to be Peel.
