One of Our Own Receives the Bell Hero Award

Constable Elaine Fowler was recently recognized for her extraordinary contribution to Crime Prevention and her outstanding work with youth in Peel Region. She was awarded the Bell Hero Award at the Safe City Mississauga annual Crime Prevention Conference. 

The Bell Hero Awards sponsored by Bell, honour an individual, an organization and a young person in Mississauga who has made an extraordinary contributions including but are not limited to, volunteer service, heroism, initiative and action, helping the community, and innovation.

She has developed successful youth initiative presentations at local high schools, including ‘Identifying Vulnerabilities in Youth’, which she has presented to almost 55,000 students since 2015.

Cst. Elaine Fowler has built fruitful partnerships in collaboration with external organizations like Safe City Mississauga Crossroads Program, which aims to prevent crime before it happens through early intervention with the youth. This program enhances their knowledge of crime prevention, promotes positive decision-making and works to reduce motivation or risk-factors associated with criminality.

For the adult audience, Cst. Elaine Fowler has created a Domestic Human Trafficking presentation which answers the need to inform adults about this growing crime trend and to support efforts in identifying possible victims or environments where this is occurring. Currently Cst. Elaine Fowler, along with Ontario Police College representatives, is working towards creating a Human Trafficking training session for officers and has accepted an opportunity to work on a short film that will be utilized to continue educating the community on Domestic Human Trafficking.

The Safe City Mississauga Crime Prevention Conference is an annual conference for police, government officials, educators, social workers, crime prevention practitioners, and community organizations. The gathering discusses best practices for crime prevention and strategies. Keynote speakers included members from Integrated National Security Enforcement Team, Royal Canadian Mountain Police, and Peel Regional Police’s very own Detective Feras Ismail, of the Equity & Inclusion Bureau.
