Officer Facing Criminal Charges (1)

Region of Peel – A 17-year officer of the Peel Regional Police was arrested and charged after a five-month-long investigation by the Professional Standards Bureau.

On Wednesday, November 21, 2018, Sergeant Eric Malone was arrested and charged with one count of Theft Under $5,000, one count of Theft Over $5,000 and one count of Breach of Trust.

The allegations are in relation to an on-duty incident that occurred on April 15, 2016, in the City of Mississauga.

The allegations were brought forward by a member of the public in June 2018. Chief Evans immediately suspended Sergeant Malone, with pay as per the provisions of the Police Services Act.

“Public trust, respect and transparency are among our core values and our officers are expected to uphold those values as outlined in our Code of Ethics. Upon learning of these allegations I immediately ordered an internal investigation and suspended the officer.” said Chief Jennifer Evans.

Sergeant Malone was released on a Promise to Appear and Undertaking with a scheduled court date of December 17, 2018, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton. Once the criminal proceedings are complete, Peel Regional Police Professional Standards Bureau will determine if the officer will be subject to further discipline under the Police Services Act.
