Officer Charged in Police Shooting

Region of Peel – The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has charged a former Peel Regional Police officer regarding a shooting incident that occurred in the City of Mississauga.

On May 10, 2020, officers were conducting an investigating and attended a residence on Ledbury Crescent at approximately 10:00 p.m. While at the location, an interaction occurred between the occupants and the officers, which resulted in the discharge of a Conducted Energy Weapon and a police firearm. A 34-year-old woman was injured and received medical attention at a hospital. 

As a result, Valerie Briffa, a 30-year-old woman was charged by the Special Investigations Unit with Careless use of a Firearm, Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm and Assault with a Weapon. She is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton, on August 4, 2020.

Valerie Briffa, who was a probationary constable, resigned from the Peel Regional Police effective June 29, 2020.

We have been asking the SIU for more timely investigations and appreciate that this investigation has been resolved quickly.
