O Canada!

WATCH the Canada Day video now!

July 1st 1867, on this day Canada would be taking its first steps in becoming an independent nation as it was preparing to sign the Constitution Act. Although still a British colony, with the signing of the Constitution Act, Canada gained an increased level of political control and governance over its own affairs and the colonies of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were united into one Dominion of Canada.

In 2019, Canada will be turning 152 years old. Peel Regional Police would like to wish everyone a very happy and safe Canada Day and even though you might not consider Canada your home as Chief Chris McCord said “every one of us brings something unique that builds the fabric of our home and native land”. Peel Regional Police is proud to call Canada our home.

In light of Canada Day here are 4 interesting facts about Canada that not all Canadians might know:

  1. There are more doughnut shops in Canada per capita than any other country.
  2. Canadians consume more macaroni and cheese than any other nation in the world.
  3. The Northwest Territories have polar bear shaped license plates - it was to celebrate the 100 year anniversary.
  4. The name ‘Kanata’ is a Huron-Iroquois word (a Native American tribe who lived in Quebec in the 16th century) for ‘village’ or ‘settlement’.  When the French explorers settled, they believed the word was used to designate the whole area. The name Canada, therefore, comes from a misunderstanding.
