Johnny Bower Lives on Forever in Hearts and Hockey Rinks
Last week, in partnership with the City of Mississauga, we helped unveil the newly renamed ice pad, Johnny Bower Rink One, at the Meadowvale 4 Rinks arena in Mississauga. Johnny’s wife Nancy and their family were on site for the rink dedication, along with Chief Jennifer Evans, employees of Peel Regional Police and community members.
Johnny is a Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender and the recipient of four Stanley Cups. His love for hockey was strong and true, and it was evident no matter where he went.
After he retired from hockey he made Mississauga his home. Johnny was committed to Peel Region and was involved in a variety of charities that always promoted the safety of children and animals. Johnny met every event with a big smile and always had heartfelt words for everyone he came across.
“I had the privilege of getting to know Johnny during my time as Chief and I was extremely proud to honour him, not only as our first and only Honourary Chief of Police, but as my very dear friend as well. He was a wonderful man, full of spirit, kindness and strength. He loved his family, his hockey, his friends, his charities and was a huge supporter of our Police Organization”, said Chief Jennifer Evans.
Appointed Honourary Chief in 2003, Johnny appeared at numerous events while proudly wearing his Peel Regional Police uniform. His unwavering commitment to charitable events resonated not only with community but also to the men and women of Peel Regional Police.
Johnny was a kind and caring man who put himself ahead of others and we miss him dearly
