Incr`edible’ Changes to Cannabis

On October 17th, an addition to the Cannabis Act legalized the sale of edible, extract, and topical Cannabis products in Canada by provincial and territorial retailers. The products are not expected to reach shelves until around December 17th as federal license holders must have a 60 day notice approved by Health Canada. Final regulations to the new products must comply with the original regulations with some extensions to their production, distribution, and use. These products have been divided into three categories:

  • Edibles: Ingestible products.
  • Extracts: A concentrated oil form of the cannabis flower.
  • Topicals: Infused products that can be applied to hair, nails, and skin.

The extract products have the same effect as edibles when taken into the body and the topical products are felt mainly where the product is applied.  Ingestible Cannabis will take about 2-4 hours to take full effect and could last up to 12 hours. It must also be sold in plain, childproof packaging.

Driving under the influence of Cannabis is still illegal under the law and precautions should be taken regarding the use and storage of these new Cannabis products.
