Inclusivity Assessment of Peel Regional Police Now Complete

Region of Peel – The Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion (CCDI) has completed its inclusivity assessment of Peel Regional Police. CCDI was selected by the Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board (PPSB) in May of 2017. Our Chief’s Management Group welcomed the review, participated in the process and encouraged employees to be involved.

On March 22, 2019, the report Current State of Inclusivity Assessment was presented to, and accepted by the PPSB.

“I have reviewed the report. It is extensive, but clearly says we need to continue to grow as a police service with respect to inclusivity to keep pace with the rapidly changing community. We know Peel Region is one of the most diverse communities in Canada and that is something we value. Last year 60.5% of our newly hired officers and cadets and 54.5% of our newly hired civilian employees were racialized.” said Chief Chris McCord.

The assessment is very thorough. It compared Peel Regional Police demographics with our community’s, and highlights our accomplishments and opportunities for improvement. The report has provided a comprehensive set of recommendations with the aim of making us better and enhancing our cultural competency.

“We recognize there is a lot of work ahead of us. We will support our leaders and employees by enhancing their cultural competencies. Our aim is to use the findings of this report to make us a best-in-class police agency. I want to thank the Police Services Board, our employees, and members of the community for their participation and candid feedback. We will be better because of your input.” said Chief Chris McCord.

To guide us in taking our organization to the next level, Peel Regional Police will hire an equity and inclusion specialist. We will look to our six Chief’s Advisory Committees (Black, Chinese, LGBTQ+, Muslim, Sikh, Youth) to help us find solutions that are meaningful to our community. We will also continue to work together with PPSB, the police associations, our employees and our community to improve.
