Crime Prevention Week: Peel Police Crime Prevention Efforts Lead to Drop in Pharmacy Robberies

Region of Peel – This Crime Prevention Week, Peel Regional Police is highlighting how prevention measures and community collaboration led to a significant decrease in pharmacy robberies.
In 2021, Peel Regional Police recorded a 234 per cent increase in pharmacy robberies, followed by an additional 400 per cent rise in 2022. Offenders primarily targeted narcotics such as oxycodone, morphine, and fentanyl.
The Central Robbery Bureau partnered with the Ontario College of Pharmacists and the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) to implement prevention measures such as time-delayed safes and high-visibility signage — a model now adopted provincewide.
These measures have produced significant results, with pharmacy robberies declining by 59 per cent in 2023 and a further 75 per cent in 2024. So far in 2025, 75 per cent of attempted robberies have been unsuccessful.
Crime prevention is a critical part of keeping communities safe. Through early intervention, education, and collaboration, police and community partners can reduce opportunities for crime before they occur.
Peel Police, in partnership with the OACP and the Government of Ontario, is proud to take part in Crime Prevention Week (Nov. 2–8), highlighting that community safety is a shared responsibility of police, government, partners, businesses, and residents.
