Black History Month Should Live Beyond February

Black History Month is an official invitation each February to learn about the contributions of black people to our society – both past and present but that’s most often where it ends.

Peel Regional Police hosted a Lunch and Learn for employees in honour of Black History Month, with a keynote speech delivered by Mr. Mark Beckles, head of RBC Insurance Advice Centre. The event was attended by officers, civilians and members of our Black Advisory Committee.

During his speech, Mark stressed the importance of having a Black History Month to honour cultures both old and new but also issued a challenge for us to find ways to leap forward. He emphasized that this can happen when we take time to learn about others, embrace diversity, insist on inclusion and defend social justice. This is an attainable goal if we all do our part.

Pause. Reflect. Challenge. And Change.
