Back To School Road Safety Campaign

Region of Peel– With the new school year about to commence, Peel Regional Police will be visiting and patrolling areas in and around school zones, in order to encourage and enforce pedestrian and driver safety.  Officers from Uniform Patrol, School Resource Officers, Divisional Traffic Units and Road Safety Services will be in school zones and on school bus routes, in search of traffic violations using a variety of resources.  Those found to be in contravention of the Highway Traffic Act or by-laws can expect strict enforcement when it comes to enforcing the rules of the road.

Parents should take the time to review safety concerns and tips with their children and are encouraged to review and practice safety rules with their children and to ensure the child is familiar with their route to the bus or school.

As students and their families settle back into school-year routines following the summer break, Peel Regional Police wishes to remind motorists and pedestrians that road safety is a shared responsibility.

If you are rushed at home chances are you will be rushed on the road.

Motorists are reminded that children will be in bus stop areas in the early morning hours and, in some cases before daylight. When a school bus has stopped and activated its flashing red lights, all vehicles approaching the bus from the front or rear of the bus must come to a complete stop before reaching the bus.  Drivers who fail to stop in these conditions face a minimum $400.00 fine and six demerit points for a first offence.

Peel Regional Police are urging motorists to drive safely, responsibly and free from distractions at all times and to be extra vigilant when travelling on roadways. Officers from all of the aforementioned units will also be participating in a distracted driving campaign and motorists can expect a zero tolerance approach when it comes to these offences. As a reminder, the fines for careless driving and failing to yield to pedestrians at cross walks, school crossings or crossovers have increased as of September 1, 2018.
