Arrest Made in 10th Homicide of the Year

Region of Peel – Investigators from the Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau continue to investigate the region’s 10th homicide of 2018.

On Saturday, May 26, 2018 at approximately 1:13 a.m. Peel Regional Police responded to reports of a stabbing at a residence in the area of Tradewind Drive and Winston Churchill Boulevard in the City of Mississauga.  Upon arrival, officers located the victim with obvious signs of trauma.  The victim, Daniel Smith a 19 year-old Mississauga resident, was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

On Wednesday, July 11, 2018, a 17 year-old male was arrested with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP, and charged with Murder and Assault Cause Bodily Harm.  Arrangements are being made  for the Young Person to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice to answer to the charges. 

A general provision of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Y.C.J.A.) prohibits the release of the name of a Young Person. Investigators previously received a judicial authorization under the Y.C.J.A. to identify the Young Person. Since the Young Person was arrested, photographs and the name can no longer be published/broadcast.
