Just like chestnuts roasting on an open fire and Jack Frost nipping on your nose are signs of the festive season, so is Peel Regional Police officers looking for impaired drivers.

The Peel Regional Police RIDE program is in full swing and officers are fanning out across the Region of Peel to not only catch impaired drivers but also to educate the public about impaired driving. With cannabis now being legal, officers continue to educate the public on cannabis and driving.

“If you consume cannabis or alcohol and are caught impaired driving, the risk is quite high. It results in a criminal charge, 90 day suspension of your licence, and a seven day impoundment of the vehicle you were driving,” advises Constable Alexander Scarchilli of Road Safety Services.

In 2018, from November 16 to November 30, 9636 vehicles were investigated via the RIDE program. As a result 23 impaired driving related charges were laid and an additional 67 drivers had their licences suspended for being in the warn range.

If you are charged, the festive season will not be so festive.
