30 Days of Back to School Road Safety

Thirty days have come and gone, the annual September Back to School campaign run by our Road Safety Services bureau has come to an end. Our 22 Divisional Traffic Unit and Neighbourhood Policing Unit got involved and want to share the outcome of their focus in Brampton.
The major goals were to increase visibility to the motorists and pedestrians using the roadways within the school zones, and leading into the school zones. The objective was to remind motorists that children frequently use these area. Playtime is not only during school hours but also after school as many school playgrounds are used at all times of the day including weekends.
Most shockingly was a vehicle that was travelling 124 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone. The reason, heading into work and late to pick up a friend, on route. While we shake our heads we are grateful no one was hurt this time. This is just one example of needless speeding and blatant disregard for the safety of our community. Our focus is to remind everyone that the roadway is a shared responsibility.
However if numbers make it a reality, then this is what 30 days of a Back to School Road Safety campaign looked like in 22 Division.
22 Division Traffic Unit issued a total 852 Provincial Offence Notices (PON).
247 PON’s for speeding
