Traffic Stop Leads to 45th Illegal Firearm Seized in 2026

Region of Peel – Officers from 12 Division have seized a loaded firearm and laid multiple charges following a traffic stop in Mississauga.

On May 9, 2026, at approximately 3:07 a.m., officers conducted an investigation into a vehicle in the area of Torbram Road and Drew Road. During the investigation, officers observed the occupants to be in violation of the Cannabis Control Act and subsequently initiated a search of the vehicle.

During the search, a loaded illegal handgun and a magazine containing ammunition were located and seized.

As a result of the investigation, Stefan Hawthorne, a 29-year-old man from Brampton, was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Careless Use or Storage of a Firearm
  • Occupant of Motor Vehicle Knowing There was a Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton at a later date.
