Peel Regional Police Statement on the Crime Stoppers Data Breach

Peel Regional Police is aware of the third-party cyber-security incident affecting Crime Stoppers organizations across Canada and the U.S. We recognize the seriousness of this incident as well as the importance of protecting the anonymity and safety of individuals who provide information to support investigations.

Peel Crime Stoppers is an independent organization. While we maintain a positive relationship with Peel Crime Stoppers, and have worked closely to support community safety, we are suspending our participation in the program. The affected platform used by Crime Stoppers organizations is operated independently through a third-party vendor and is not connected to Peel Regional Police systems or infrastructure.

The safety and security of Peel residents who have used the Crime Stoppers program is our primary concern. We have requested information from the third-party vendor, Navigate360, to assess any potential risks arising from this breach. We will not resume participation in the program until we are fully satisfied that the platform is secure. We recognize the importance of public trust, confidentiality, and most of all, people’s safety.

Members of the public who wish to provide information about a crime or public safety concern are encouraged to contact us directly through our existing reporting channels. While this does not provide the anonymity associated with the Crime Stoppers program, it will ensure information is received directly by investigators.

Questions regarding the breach, the scope of any affected information, and measures taken in response should be directed to the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association (CCSA).
