Peel Police Warn of an Increase in Distraction Thefts After $19,000 in Jewellery Stolen in Brampton
Region of Peel – Officers from 22 Division’s Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) are investigating after an elderly woman had approximately $19,000 worth of gold jewellery stolen during a distraction theft in Brampton.
On Tuesday, July 28, at approximately 6 p.m., the victim was walking in the area of Chinguacousy Road and Sandalwood Parkway West when she was approached by two women in a white SUV. One of the women exited the vehicle, touched the victim’s feet and hugged her. During the interaction, the suspect switched the victim’s gold necklace with a metal necklace and removed three gold bangles from her wrists.
So far this year, Peel Regional Police has received more than 230 reports of distraction thefts across the region, with investigators looking at possible links between incidents in Peel and similar thefts reported in other parts of Ontario. In 2024, officers investigated 25 distraction thefts, a number that rose to 222 in 2025, and has reached 266 so far this year. Peel Regional Police has dedicated resources to investigating these offences and identifying those involved.
Distraction thefts involve one or more individuals creating a diversion while personal belongings are taken from a victim. Older adults are frequently targeted while alone, either outside their homes or in public spaces. Most incidents occur during daylight hours. Suspects may approach victims while asking for directions, offerings gifts or attempting to engage them in conversation.
Investigators want to remind the public to remain aware of their surroundings, be cautious when approached by strangers, avoid unwanted physical contact, report suspicious activity immediately and, if possible, obtain descriptions of suspects and involved vehicles.
