More than 1,000 Charges Laid by Peel Regional Police as part of its Back-to-School Traffic Safety Campaign
Region of Peel – Peel Regional Police has concluded its annual Back-to-School Traffic Safety Campaign, resulting in 1,034 charges being laid by officers conducting targeted enforcement in school zones across Brampton and Mississauga.
Led by the Road Safety Services Bureau, the campaign focused on improving safety for students, families, crossing guards and school staff during the busy return-to-school period.
With thousands of children walking, cycling and travelling to and from school each day, officers targeted high-risk driving behaviours that increase the risk of serious collisions in school and community safety zones.
Enforcement efforts between Sept. 8 and Sept. 30 resulted in:
- 495 Speeding charges
- 22 stunt Driving charges
- 96 Disobey Stop Sign charges
- 5 Careless Driving charges
- 2 Fail to Stop for School Bus charges.
While the campaign has concluded, efforts by Peel Regional Police have not. Proactive traffic enforcement is a year-round mission in order to keep roads safe for all road users.
To help keep roads safe, members of the public are urged to report dangerous driving behaviours by filing an online report via Road Watch. Photo and video evidence of dangerous driving incidents can also be submitted through the following evidence submission portal.
If dangerous driving poses an immediate threat to public safety, members of the public should call 911.
QUOTE
“School zones should be among the safest places in our communities, yet officers continue to encounter drivers who are speeding, ignoring stop signs and engaging in other dangerous behaviours. The results of this campaign are a reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility, and that every decision behind the wheel can have serious consequences for children and families.”
