Arrest Made in Theft of Hurricane Melissa Relief Supplies Destined for Jamaica
Region of Peel – Investigators with the Commercial Auto Crime Bureau have arrested and charged a Brampton man following the theft of hurricane relief supplies destined for Jamaica.
On Dec. 3, 2025, at approximately 5:10 a.m., a suspect broke into a secured storage facility near Derry Road East and Goreway Drive in Mississauga. Using a transport truck, the suspect hitched a trailer with a shipping container and fled the area. Within the container was thousands of dollars in relief supplies such as clothing and non-perishables which was awaiting shipment to Jamaica to aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
Following an extensive investigation, the suspect was identified as 40-year-old Varinder Dhillon of Brampton. Varinder is currently on probation for similar offences and has been prohibited from driving indefinitely.
As a result of this investigation, more than $1 million of stolen property was recovered.
The recovered property was returned to its rightful owner and shipped to Kingston, Jamaica, where it was to be dispersed for hurricane relief.
On March 11, 2026, officers executed a search warrant at a home in Brampton and Varinder was arrested, charged and is currently being held in custody. It is alleged that he committed the following collective offences:
- Break and Enter and Commit an Indictable Offence
- Theft Over $5,000 X2
- Operation While Prohibited X2
- Breach of Probation Order X3
- Fail to Comply with Release Order
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime X3
