Peel Police Rescue Nearly 60 Kittens and Eight Cats in Animal Cruelty Investigation
Region of Peel – Investigators from the 11 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) have charged a Mississauga man following an investigation into allegations of animal cruelty.
On April 1, Peel Regional Police received information from Animal Welfare Services regarding multiple incidents in which kittens were sold in distressing conditions and later died from their injuries shortly after being taken to their new homes.
As a result of these reports, on April 23, investigators with 11 Division CIB executed a search warrant in collaboration with Animal Welfare Services’ (AWS) Major Incident Management Team. AWS inspectors and an embedded AWS Regional veterinarian conducted a joint investigation, which resulted in an arrest.
During the execution of the search warrant, 57 kittens and eight adult cats were rescued and immediately transported to an animal rescue centre, where they received urgent veterinary care.
Qiang Yu, 38, of Mississauga has been arrested and charged with 134 counts of Causing Unnecessary Suffering To Animals contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
Yu was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Police confirmed that no other animals are outstanding. The animals are now in the care and custody of the Mississauga animal shelter, where they will remain pending judicial outcome.
