Man Under Firearm Prohibition Arrested After Officer Shot at in Mississauga

Region of Peel - A man who was subject to multiple court-ordered firearm prohibitions has been arrested after discharging a firearm at a Peel Regional Police officer in Mississauga.

On Sunday, June 21, members of the Strategic and Tactical Enforcement Policing (STEP) team were conducting proactive patrols in the area of Torbram Road when officers observed a suspicious male fleeing a nearby establishment while wearing a mask around his chin and jumping multiple fences.

Shortly thereafter, an officer located the suspect walking southbound on Torbram Road. As the officer attempted to speak with him, the suspect fled on foot. During the pursuit, the suspect turned and discharged a firearm multiple times toward the officer, but missed.

Additional officers quickly responded and the suspect was arrested. The suspect was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, treated, and released into police custody. Two officers sustained minor injuries during the incident and were assessed at the scene.

As a result, Isaiah Bachoo, a 24-year-old man from Brampton, was charged with:

  • Discharging a Firearm with Intent
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm

Investigators are consulting with the Crown regarding additional and more serious charges.

At the time of his arrest, Bachoo was subject to multiple court-ordered firearms prohibitions stemming from previous firearm-related convictions in Thunder Bay in 2023, including a lifetime prohibition from possessing prohibited or restricted firearms, prohibited devices and ammunition, as well as a 10-year prohibition from possessing any firearm.

QUOTE

“This is another stark reminder of the dangers our officers face every day while on the front lines working to keep our communities safe. We are grateful the officer was not seriously injured and that no members of the public were harmed. This is another example of the cycle of violent crime that continues to impact our communities and must be stopped. We continue to advocate for stronger bail and sentencing to better manage repeat violent offenders like this and reduce the risk they pose to our communities.”
