Involved In A Car Accident, Now What Do You Do?

Screeching tires, the crunching of metal and plastic, the feeling of disbelief, these are all normal parts of a car accident that can leave anyone feeling shaken up. When you’ve been involved in a car accident it can be a nerve racking experience, emotions can run high, especially when you’re not sure of what to do next.

Let’s review the steps you should take and what you’re required to do if you find yourself involved in a collision.

  1. Ensure that you and your passengers are okay. If there are any injuries - call 911.
  2. If still driveable and no one is injured, move your vehicle off the roadway to a safe location.  Many people have been injured after a collision while looking at damage while standing in a live lane of traffic.
  3. Activate your four-way hazard lights to increase your visibility.
  4. Make contact with the other driver and if they are injured call 911.
  5. Inspect vehicles for damage and take photos if safe to do so.
  6. Exchange driver licence, ownership and insurance information with the other driver. Tip - take photos of all documents.
  7. If damage to the vehicles is less than an estimated $2000 combined, there is no need to contact Police. If the estimated damage exceeds $2000 and the vehicles are driveable, attend a police division or collision reporting center.
  8. Contact you insurance company.

Car accidents can be stressful and leave you unsure of what to do, so remember to take a few slow breaths, take your time to assess the situation and then begin following the above steps.
