Arrest Made in Hate-Motivated Investigation

Region of Peel – Investigators from the 11 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau have charged two youth in relation to a hate-motivated crime against a Mississauga family.

On Saturday, September 11, 2021, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the victim, a 44-year-old man, was accompanied by his family and were conducting a faith ceremony in the area of Barbertown Road and Mississauga Road in the City of Mississauga. Two men approached the family, shouted derogatory and hateful remarks, and proceeded to assault the victim several times. The victim was able to break away, and he and his family retreated to their vehicle and attempted to flee. As they drove away, stones were thrown at their car, which resulted in damage being caused to the vehicle.

On September 14, 2021, after in in-depth investigation and as a result of dashcam footage received from the community, a 16-year-old male youth from Mississauga was charged with the following offences:

  • Assault
  • Assault With a Weapon
  • Mischief Over $5000
  • Mischief With Bias

A 15-year-old male youth from Mississauga was charged with the following offences:

  • Assault
  • Assault With a Weapon
  • Mischief Over $5000
  • Mischief With Bias

Both of the youth will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on a future date in answer to the charges.

A general provision of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Y.C.J.A.) prohibits the release of the name of a Young Person and, therefore, the identities of the Young Persons charged in this investigation are protected.
