Posted On Thursday November 17, 2022

Region of Peel– Investigators from the Fraud Bureau have arrested and charged a man in relation to an alleged "Romance Scam" that lasted for months during 2020 and into 2021.

On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, a criminal investigation concluded into the suspect, alleged to have received in excess of $10,000 through electronic transfer methods. The older adult victim sent money to allegedly pay off legal fees and medical bills, all with the promise to one-day meet in person. After speaking to family members, the victim realized they were the target of a "Romance Scam." It was discovered the victim only ever communicated with the suspect electronically and had never met in person.

Officers from the Fraud Bureau arrested and charged Alex Jana, a 64-year-old from Brampton, with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. He was released on an Undertaking and will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Monday January 9, 2023, in answer to the charges.
