Region of Peel –In recognition for their courage, quick thinking and heroic work during a 2022 incident, three Peel Regional Police officers of Division 11 were awarded the AXON Jack Cover Medal of Heroism

On July 26, 2022, Constables Martin Boreczek, Carl Mullings and Raymond Yousef responded to a call about an individual in distress on the edge of an unknown high-rise building. The responding officers used their knowledge of the area and land-marking skills to identify the location of the person. Upon arrival at the building, which was under construction, officers climbed over 50 flights of stairs to the roof and helped bring the individual to safety.

The Jack Cover Medal of Heroism honours individuals for de-escalating high-stress, high-risk incidents in an empathetic and compassionate manner.

“I am incredibly proud of Constables Boreczek, Mullings and Yousef. This recognition of their professionalism and poise in a highly dynamic situation highlights their great work and is a reflection the selfless response by our officers throughout Peel Region every day,” said Peel Regional Police, Chief Nishan Duraiappah. “Stories like this remind us of the tremendous risks that our frontline officers accept in their commitment to keeping our communities safe. Our officers’ dedication to helping our most vulnerable is making a difference and is rightfully being recognized year-after-year.”

Officers involved in this incident utilized their mental health crisis training to effectively communicate with the individual, while simultaneously coordinating a response from a crisis support team. Additionally, the man was connected to wrap-around support services and resources in collaboration with our community and policing partners.
