Region of Peel – Peel Regional Police (PRP) welcomes today’s funding announcement by the Government of Ontario for the acquisition of helicopters through the establishment of the Greater Toronto Area Joint Air Support Unit (JASU). This investment will bolster PRP’s capability to combat crime and enhance the safety of our community, support our frontline and keep our officers safe.

“The Joint Air Support Unit is a groundbreaking collaboration that will significantly enhance our ability to ensure community safety and well-being," said Peel Police Service Board Chair Nando Iannicca. "This initiative, made possible through the provincial government's funding and unwavering support, underscores our commitment to innovative public safety solutions. We thank the province for its continued investment in Peel, which reinforces our dedication to enhancing the safety and well-being of our residents.”

In addition to the PRP helicopter, the JASU will include new helicopters for Durham Regional Police Service and Halton Regional Police Service.

“This is a monumental investment that will provide much needed support to our officers and help them do the difficult work they do every day to enhance community safety,” said Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah. “The addition of these helicopters is a great example of what can be accomplished when police services and the provincial government work together to help improve police response and safety for everyone.”

The addition of a helicopter will significantly assist PRP’s operations through regular patrols, enhance suspect and vehicle pursuits and apprehension, help with search efforts for missing persons, increase road safety enforcement especially as it pertains to street racing and stunt driving, and improve overall public safety.
