Region of Peel – A traffic stop by officers has resulted in numerous charges for a Mississauga man, after officers located a loaded firearm inside of a vehicle.

On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, patrol officers from 11 Division conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Princess Royal Drive and Confederation Parkway, in the City of Mississauga. During the course of the investigation, officers located a loaded Glock 33 handgun with a prohibited, extended magazine.

“Safety on our roadways is a priority for our community. While traffic stops are conducted on a regular basis by officers, and as clearly illustrated in this investigation, there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop,” said Marc Andrews, Deputy Chief of Policing Operations. “Despite the unknown risks they faced at the time, the diligent investigation by the officers has helped take another illegal firearm off our streets, and contributed to the safety and well-being of our community”.

Devin Yates, a 20-year-old man from Mississauga, has been charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Tampering with a Serial Number of a Firearm
  • Occupant of a Motor Vehicle, Knowing There was a Firearm
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device, Knowing it is Unauthorized
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking x4
  • Possessing Cannabis for the Purpose of Selling
  • Drive Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available

He was held for a bail hearing and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on October 6, 2021, to answer to the charges.
