Impaired Charges Laid in Fatal Collision That Took the Life of York Regional Police Constable Travis Gillespie

Region of Peel – York Regional Police Officers have laid charges against a 23-year-old Markham man after a fatal collision that took the life of York Regional Police Constable Travis Gillespie in Markham. 

On Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at approximately 6:00 a.m., York Regional Police responded to reports of a motor vehicle collision along Major Mackenzie Drive near Warden Avenue in the City of Markham.

Constable Travis Gillespie, 38, was pronounced deceased on the scene. 

A 23-year-old Markham man was taken into custody by York Regional Police officers and was transported to a trauma centre. His injuries are considered minor. A third involved driver did not sustain any injuries.

Peel Regional Police Major Collision Bureau took carriage of the investigation and 23-year-old Haoju Zhou from Markham has been charged with the following offences: 

  • Impaired Operation Cause Death 
  • Dangerous Operation Cause Death

Haoju Zhou was released from hospital and appeared for a bail hearing before the Superior Court of Justice in York Region on September 14, 2022.
