Public Mischief Charges Laid

Posted On Tuesday November 15, 2022

Region of Peel – Investigators from the 12 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau have arrested and charged two people for allegedly making a false police report which initiated an intense police investigation and unnecessary use of police resources.

As a result, on Sunday, November 13, 2022, Dawood Afsar, a 36-year-old man from Mississauga and Danielle Violante, a 43-year-old woman from Mississauga, were arrested and charged with Public Mischief. They will both attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton in January 2023.

“Our officers prioritize their caseloads daily and work hard to resolve on-going investigations. Making false claims to the police results in the misappropriation of resources and takes precious time away from other serious and necessary priorities. It is a serious offence to report false matters or to embellish misleading details to police,” said Deputy Chief of Community Policing Operations, Marc Andrews.

These charges stemmed from an incident on Monday, October 31, 2022, in which police responded to a 9-1-1 call, placed by Dawood Afsar, near Cawthra Road and Burnhamthorpe Road East in the City of Mississauga. Peel Police responded to what was believed to be a priority call for service indicating a person inside another vehicle was threatening Dawood Afsar and Danielle Violante with a firearm.

On November 1, 2022, investigators located and placed two individuals safely in custody, but both were released unconditionally following the release of new evidence that proved the above allegations of a present firearm to be false.
