Sacred Headdress Recovered by Patrol Officer

Region of Peel – Patrol officers from 21 Division have located and recovered a stolen ceremonial headdress, and vehicle belonging to its owner, in Brampton.

On Friday, March 10, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the victim parked his vehicle, a 2022 Green Jeep Wrangler, at a hotel parking lot in the area of Dixie Road & Matheson Boulevard in Mississauga.  Investigators believe that the vehicle was stolen at approximately 3:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 11, 2023.  

Inside the stolen vehicle was a sacred headdress, with significant sentimental value and cultural importance.

On Monday, March 13, 2023, a patrol officer from 21 Division in the area of Bramalea Road & East Drive in Brampton identified the stolen vehicle in a parking lot. Following an investigation, the sacred headdress and the vehicle were both recovered. There was no physical damage sustained and the property was returned to its rightful owner.

“Through proactive policing, our officers were able to locate and recover the stolen ceremonial headdress of Nipissing First Nation. Recognizing the great significance of the sacred headdress, we thank our community for their assistance, and our officers for their dedication and determination to ensure its safe return to Chief Scott McLeod.” said Chief Nishan Duraiappah of Peel Regional Police.
