Charges Laid in Human Trafficking Investigation
Region of Peel– Investigators from the Specialized Enforcement Bureau-Vice Unit have arrested and charged an individual in relation to a human trafficking investigation.
In May, officers initiated an investigation involving a victim engaged in the sex trade within the Region of Peel. It is alleged that the accused exploited the victim, exercised control over her activities, and profited from her earnings.
On May 4, Michael Smith, a 31-year-old man from Brampton was arrested and charged with the following offences:
- Trafficking in Persons
- Exercise Control
- Advertising Sexual Services
- Receiving Benefit Resulting from Trafficking in Persons
- Material Benefit from Sexual Services
Smith was held for a bail hearing and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
