Region of Peel – Investigators from the 11 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau have laid charges against a man, after a dog was injured while being dragged alongside a moving vehicle.

On Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at approximately 4 p.m., multiple calls were received to the Peel Regional Police Communications Centre, after witnesses observed a small dog being dragged with a leash, by the driver of a vehicle in the area of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Destination Drive in the City of Mississauga.

Several concerned citizens were able to stop the vehicle, at which point the driver dropped the leash and fled the area in his vehicle. The dog was transported to an emergency vet hospital in the Town of Oakville by Mississauga Animal Services, where it received treatment for the injuries it received.

Officers were able to locate the vehicle and driver at a residence in the City of Mississauga, and subsequently took him into custody. As a result of further investigation, 70-year-old Jose Tavares from Mississauga has been charged with the following offences:

- Injuring an Animal
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Impaired Operation of a Conveyance

The dog, a 7-month-old Pomeranian named Sky is expected to make a full recovery from the physical injuries it sustained. The veterinary hospital that is currently treating Sky has received countless offers of financial donations but are not in a position to accept donations. Instead, we ask that you consider donating to your local humane society to support their programs and initiatives.
