Arrest Made in Human Trafficking Investigation

Region of Peel – Investigators from the Specialized Enforcement Bureau - Vice have arrested and charged a man concerning a sex-trafficking investigation of a woman in Peel Region.

In early May 2022, investigators from the Specialized Enforcement Bureau - Vice Unit investigated a violent assault in a Mississauga hotel. Upon further investigation, officers determined a woman in her 20s was being trafficked in the sex trade by the suspect, who exercised control over aspects of the victim’s life and profited financially.  

On Thursday, May 19, 2022, investigators arrested Christopher Canete, a 25-year-old man from Brampton, charging him with the following alleged offences:

  • Assault cause bodily harm - strangulation  
  • Assault  
  • Theft Under $5000  
  • Procuring 
  • Human Trafficking  
  • Receiving Material Benefits  
  • Exercise Control, Direction or Influence  
  • Derive Material Benefit  
  • Assault with a Weapon 

He was held for a bail hearing and attended the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Wednesday, May 20, 2022.  

Investigators believe there may be additional victims, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area, and are urging they to contact them at 905-453-2121, extension 3555.
